Buffy held the squalling bundle close.
“Father?” the nurse asked.
“I don’t know,” the Slayer lied.
“Buffy,” Giles’ face was serious. “Are you sure?”
“What other choice do I have?” A finger traced the line of soft, downy black hair. “At least he’ll live.”
The nurse’s face was compassionate as she claimed the infant.
“He’s going to a good home.”
Sobs wracked Buffy. “I love you, my sweet baby. Oh god, Giles! Don’t let me do this!”
“I’m sorry, Buffy. I can’t tell you how much.” Tears streamed down the Watcher’s face. “It’s the only way to keep him safe.”
